A Diploma He Never Got to Receive — but a Hero the Nation Will Never Forget

On May 7, 2019, tragedy struck STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado when a shooter opened fire, injuring eight students. Among them, 18-year-old Kendrick Castillo displayed extraordinary courage. Instead of fleeing, Kendrick ran toward the shooter, trying to stop him and giving his classmates precious moments to escape. Tragically, Kendrick lost his life in the process, but his selfless act prevented what could have been a far worse massacre.

A month later, at graduation, Kendrick’s classmates created a moving tribute to honor their fallen friend. An empty chair was placed in the front row, holding his photo, gown, and stole, symbolizing the seat that should have been his. His best friend walked across the stage to accept Kendrick’s diploma on his behalf, ensuring he was recognized as a graduate. Kendrick didn’t get to live to celebrate his achievement, but his bravery, sacrifice, and heroism left a lasting legacy that inspired his classmates, community, and the nation.
