Greta Thunberg Sparks Controversy After Venice Canal Protest Leads to City Ban
Greta Thunberg is reportedly facing a temporary ban from Venice after joining an Extinction Rebellion protest that turned several Italian rivers and canals bright green. The group used a biodegradable dye to draw attention to what they call government inaction on climate change.
Thunberg and 35 other activists were fined €150 and banned from the city for 48 hours. Extinction Rebellion defended the stunt, accusing Italy’s government of blocking stronger climate measures and insisting the dye was harmless.
Regional governor Luca Zaia condemned the act as disrespectful and potentially harmful, while public reaction has been split—some applaud the activists’ urgency, others criticize the disruption.
