The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey reveals reason they have some regrets for coming out as non-binary publicly

Bella Ramsey has opened up about their decision to come out as non-binary, conceding that they have some regrets in doing so.

At 19 years old, the Brit announced that they are genderfluid during the promotion for the The Last of Us back in January 2023, and at the time discovered just how toxic the internet can be.

Now, two years on the 21-year-old has touched on the topic which they never wanted to become headline news, just as season two of The Last of Us is finally upon us – which airs on Sundays at 9pm ET on HBO.

During an interview with The Guardian, Ramsey was asked to sum up how they feel about coming out as non-binary in the manner that they did.

“Part of me looks back and I wish that I didn’t, because I didn’t want it to become a headline and a big thing,” they explain.

“And obviously it was going to, and I didn’t really understand that at the time. And I wasn’t really prepared for that. But on the other hand, people have said to me that it’s been very helpful for them seeing some representation.

“So it’s been a mixed bag, but overall, I think it was a good thing, just for me living more freely, without feeling like I’m keeping a secret.”

Ramsey’s views on that matter has since changed, as they shared how they are over their gender and sexual orientation being their most talked-about subject, and instead would rather speak of other topics.

They continued: “But now I’m like, ‘I’ll talk about it, but I don’t want it to be the focus any more.’ I guess I’m just quite chill with it. And I want everyone else to be as chill with it basically.”

It comes as Ramsey, who hails from Nottingham in England, opted to deactivate their Instagram account last week – citing both Kit Harrington, who they worked with on Game of Thrones, and Jesse Eisenberg, who they worked with on Resistance, as to why they did.

“Those are the two actors who I just thought were the coolest people to ever walk the earth, and neither of them had social media,” Ramsey told the publication.

“I remember them just being so normal and funny and interesting. They were famous because they were great at something, not because they were celebrities. They never pushed themselves out there and made themselves more famous.”

They also conceded that they only set up their Instagram account initially due to a number of fake accounts pretending to be them.
